May 1st

Ribbons of fog drift down the river valley
Forming, dissipating, re-forming...
Smoke curls from a few village chimneys on this still-cool spring morning.
No one is at Daniel's depot. May 1st is a national holiday
Shutters are still closed; people sleep in. No one works today.
No one, that is, except the bakers. And the people who own the wine shop, the gourmet food store, the little grocery stores, the flower shops, and the restaurants in Cajarc. This is France, after all. People have to eat and drink and have their bread!
And wish their families and friends 'Happy May Day' with tiny nosegays of lily-of-the-valley.
